Fingerprint vs face recognition vs keypad: choosing unlock methods
Buyers ask for 'all methods'. In practice each method has a user group, a failure mode and a cost. Here is how to pick the combination that sells.
Fingerprint
The most accepted method worldwide and usually the fastest for repeat users. Optical sensors are cheaper; semiconductor sensors are more consistent with dry or worn fingers. Wet, dirty or damaged fingers are the main failure mode, so always keep a code or card as backup.
Face recognition
Hands-free and popular for apartments and offices where users carry bags or boxes. 3D structured-light modules handle lighting variation far better than 2D camera systems, and they are correspondingly more expensive. Check the recognition distance, the height range it covers and how it behaves in backlit doorways.
Keypad and code
The cheapest method to add and the easiest to give to a guest, cleaner or contractor because it can be changed without touching hardware. Anti-peep (randomised digit) entry and temporary codes are the features buyers ask about. It is also the essential fallback when a biometric sensor fails.
Card and phone
RFID cards suit hotels and offices with existing card systems and are quick to issue. App unlocking adds remote control, temporary access and audit logs, which is what property managers actually pay for — but the app ecosystem must be reliable and the accounts must belong to your customer, not to the factory.
Recommended combinations
- Residential retail → fingerprint + code + key, optional card
- Apartments and serviced flats → face or fingerprint + code + app, with audit log
- Hotels → card or code driven by management software, with mechanical override
- Offices → code + card, with time-restricted access
- Airbnb-style rentals → code or app with time-limited access
Frequently asked questions
Is face recognition more secure than fingerprint?
Security depends on the module class and how liveness is checked, not on the method name. Ask for the false-accept behaviour and whether the sensor is 3D or 2D.
Should every lock include a mechanical key?
It is strongly recommended: it is the only method that works with a dead battery, and many markets expect it.
